Maritime Piracy & Robbery at Five-Year High

Reported incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships worldwide in 2025 reached their highest level since 2020 according to figures released by the ICC’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB).

In its latest Annual Piracy and Armed Robbery Report, IMB indicated it received reports of 137 incidents against ships in 2025, an 18% increase from 116 reported instances in 2024 and the greatest number since 2020 when reported incidents of maritime piracy and armed robbery spiked at 195.

Of the 137 incidents catalogued in 2025, IMB said that 121 vessels were boarded, four vessels were hijacked, two were fired upon, and ten others endured attempted attacks.
