In partnership with the International Trade & Forfaiting Association (ITFA), Trade Treasury Payments (TTP) published its “Trade Finance Guide 2026” on 27 May 2026.
Written and edited by a team contributors from of the two groups, updating of the guide from last year was motivated by rapidly changing technological and AI dynamics influencing how trade is conducted and trade finance furnished.
At its outset, the Guide describes trade finance as “a set of techniques aimed at mitigating and transferring trade risks to the financial sector, and/or using bank funding to enable domestic and cross border/international trade flows.”
The Guide lays out the different risk types associated with trade finance and relative levels of commercial trade risk faced by trade finance users. It then presents a highly detailed “Trade Finance Taxonomy” which charts the various areas, techniques, and instruments involved in trade finance.
Based on this taxonomy, the bulk of the Guide focuses on trade finance products in the primary market with particular attention on Supply Chain Finance (SCF) techniques – including Payables Finance, Receivables Purchase, Forfaiting – and forms of Structured Commodity Trade Finance – including Pre-Export Finance, Pre-Payment Finance, Borrowing Base Finance, Inventory Finance, and Tolling.
The Guide then addresses the secondary market, including trade risk distribution means of securing credit protection against the underlying risk (unfunded distribution) or by a true sale of the risk (funded distribution). It also highlights the significant roles of Credit Insurance, Export Credit Agency Financing, and Multilateral Development Banks in supporting international trade.
The Guide concludes with treatment of digital channels by identifying key players in the industry engaged in offering Front-End eBanking Solutions for Trade Finance, Core Banking and Specialized Trade Finance Back Office Systems for Banks, Trade Finance Management Systems for Corporates, and Trade Networks.
